theater of mineral NADEs is part of a series of compositions by Eyvind Kang. NADE is a Sanskrit word with a number of meanings: "channels of the subtle body," "sound," and "nothingness." There are 23 NADEs in all.
With a grant from the Jack Straw Foundation's Artist Support Program, Kang began to record these pieces, transforming them from concepts into "living NADEs." Although the instrumentation and nature of the pieces varies, they are connected by what the composer likens to Karlheinz Stockhausen's "unified time structures": "Some NADEs are contained within other NADEs, some are very short, others longer. In performance, some NADEs will use film and dance as a visual corollary." (Kang) Several of the pieces are improvisations based on Kang's sketches, yet they bear rhythmic structures similar to the composed NADEs.
Eyvind Kang (b. 1971) has described his compositional style as being related to film soundtrack music. He uses structures and conventions found in classical music and jazz, and is also influenced by traditional and popular styles. Kang's central artistic concern is with "the connection between levels of abstraction and representation of thought and placing different areas of thought inside each other." (Kang)
Kang was born in Corvallis, Oregon, and lived in a number of primarily Canadian cities throughout his childhood. He began violin lessons at six years of age in Regina, Saskatchewan, played tuba in a school band in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and studied philosophy for two years at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. He then relocated to Seattle, Washington, studying music at Cornish College for the Arts (1992-1994) and violin with Michael White. He has since performed and recorded with Bill Frisell, Wayne Horvitz, Joe McPhee, Secret Chiefs 3, Sun City Girls, and John Zorn. He has also composed scores for film, theater, and dance. Recordings of Kang's music can be found primarily on the Tzadik label.
