Mark Wingate:
"Klang, Kar, und Melodie depicts a day in the life of an Austin, Texas commuter. So why the German title? It is a bad pun on the musical term 'Klangfarbenmelodie' coined by German composer Arnold Schoenberg which means literally: 'Sound-color-melody'. German intellectualism aside, this piece is a hallucinatory journey through the congested arterial streets and back alleyways of an American city near the end of the millennium, as well as a glimpse into the inner psyche of a human being forced to navigate through such chaos. Klang, Kar, und Melodie won the Prix de la Musique Electroacous-tique Caractère during the 23rd International Electroacoustic Music Competition in Bourges, France."
Electroacoustic composer Mark Wingate (b. 1954) creates music combining traditional acoustic instruments, voice, and natural sounds with synthetic materials created in a recording studio through digital processing. This interweaving of acoustic and electronic elements produces a sonic blend of the 'natural' and 'unnatural.' Some of Wingate's musical influences include John Coltrane, George Martin and the Beatles, John McLaughlin, Steve Reich, and Igor Stravinsky, and Gregorian chant.
Born in Ithaca, New York, Wingate studied composition at the University of Texas at Austin and Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. His music has been featured at festivals including Gaudeamus International Music Week, International Computer Music Association, ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music), Warsaw Autumn, and many others. He has been honored with composer fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, and United States Fulbright Commission. Awards for his compositions include the Prix Ars Electronica, Austria; Prix de la Musique Electroacoustique Caractère, Bourges, France; Prix de Rome, Italy; and Stockholm Electronic Arts Award, Sweden.
Wingate co-founded and directed the Electronic Arts Studio at Istanbul Technical University in Turkey. He currently directs the electroacoustic program at Florida State University College of Music in Tallahassee. His music can be found on the Centaur, empreintes DIGITALes, and Mnémosyne Musique Média labels.
